Finding the Full Path to Files in Google Drive

I may be the only one who has this problem with Google Drive, but I wanted to mention it so it’s at least documented where I can find it again later.

I don’t have Google Drive Desktop installed, and for various reasons, I don’t want it installed.  Using only the web interface can make it a little counter intuitive to find document locations.  Don’t get me wrong, finding documents is easy — it’s finding the location of the document that’s a pain.  Here’s a perfect example: I’ve got a document Groceries that contains my shopping list for the week.  When I created that document, I also created another one in the same folder to keep track of what’s on sale this week.  The problem is that I don’t remember the name of that second file.  When I do a search for “Groceries”, Google unhelpfully forgets to add a column to the search results showing the location for me to click on.  I can right-click on the document and select Move To… which offers a dialog showing the (unclickable) name of the final folder in the chain, but not the full path.

So that’s the problem, here’s the solution:

1. Search for your file

2. In the results list, click the checkbox next to the file file name

3. On the far right, click the Details and Activity icon (it’s an “i” in a circle)

4. Open the Details tab in this window

5. Down at the bottom of this window, you’ll find a section “Folders”.  [Finally] this is the clickable link that will open the folder.

Here’s a screeny (it’s worth 1,000 words).

Note: Something I noticed while documenting this — if you’re currently browsing the folder where the file is located, the link in the Details tab is not clickable.
